Markets & Management (M&M ) provides an innovative, liberal arts approach to business education. The program draws on knowledge from a variety of disciplines including sociology, economics, political science, history, and business. Each course in the program deals in some way with the impact of different organizational forms on managing human resources, coordinating work, integrating technology, and using business networks in an increasingly competitive global economy. In carrying out the educational mission at Duke, the M&M program is guided by four overarching learning objectives: Bridging Theory and Research; Teamwork; Communication Skills; and Active Learning.

Preparation for Diverse Careers

Since its 1990 inaugural year, increasing numbers of Duke students have enrolled in Markets and Management Studies and it has become one of the University's most popular programs.

The M&M program is based on a rigorous and comprehensive core curriculum. Courses are interdisciplinary in content and the structure of the core curriculum covers multiple levels of analysis, ranging from the global to the local, and from institutions to individuals.

Markets & Management Studies makes a concerted effort to bring Duke undergraduates closer to the business world. This is done in a variety of ways:

  • Guest Lecturers: Visting executives and business experts participate regularly in M&M courses. Practitioners in the Classroom: Professors of the Practice teach the entrepreneurship and leadership courses.
  • Career Events: Sponsored by the Program to allow students to meet M&M alumni and discuss career paths they have chosen. Recent events have focused on careers in banking, management consulting, and advertising.
  • Annual Student Paper Awards: Cash prizes awarded to students for best research papers and business plans.
  • M&M Research and Teaching Fellows: Graduate students in a variety of departments serve as resources for Duke undergraduates.
  • Resource Room: Houses magazines, journals, professional publications, videos, Harvard Business School case studies, and course materials on reserve.
  • Internship Advising: The M&M Program Coordinator meets with students to discuss ways to search for internships, including a database that contains 300 internship opportunities, referral to websites with internship listings and information available at Duke's Career Development Center.

Duke graduates who have received Markets & Management certificates pursue a variety of careers in organizations such as: Accenture (formerly Andersen Consulting), Lehman Brothers, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, General Electric Corporation, Wachovia Bank, Bain & Company, Goldman Sachs, AT&T, IBM Corporation, and The Carson Group. Some are entrepreneurs and many pursue graduate degrees in areas such as law, public health, and business.
