About The Markets and Management Certificate Program"The Markets and Management Studies certificate program at Duke is a major new innovation in approaches to undergraduate business education...one that is being copied elsewhere in the nation"The Markets & Management Studies certificate program at Duke is designed to meet the needs of Duke undergraduates who wish to study business issues and functions in preparation for careers in business and management, banking, consulting, government, the non-profit sector, and related graduate fields. Courses in the program emphasize three integrated themes:
Organizational studies in the social sciences provide an innovative, liberal arts approach to business education. The Markets & Management (M&M) program is rooted in sociology, but it also includes studies in a variety of disciplines -- economics, history, political science, public policy studies, ethics, and management science. Each course in the program deals in some way with the impact of different organizational forms on managing human resources, coordinating work, integrating technology, and using business networks in an increasingly competitive global economy. In carrying out the educational mission at Duke, the M&M program is guided by four overarching learning objectives: Bridging Theory and Research; Teamwork; Communication Skills; and Active Learning. Preparation for Diverse CareersSince its 1990 inaugural year, increasing numbers of Duke students have enrolled in Markets and Management Studies and it has become one of the University's most popular programs. The M&M program is based on a rigorous and comprehensive core curriculum. Courses are interdisciplinary in content and the structure of the core curriculum covers multiple levels of analysis, ranging from the global to the local, and from institutions to individuals. Markets & Management Studies makes a concerted effort to bring Duke undergraduates closer to the business world. This is done in a variety of ways:
Duke graduates who have received Markets & Management certificates pursue a variety of careers in organizations such as: Accenture (formerly Andersen Consulting), Lehman Brothers, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, General Electric Corporation, Wachovia Bank, Bain & Company, Goldman Sachs, AT&T, IBM Corporation, and The Carson Group. Some are entrepreneurs and many pursue graduate degrees in areas such as law, public health, and business. Sources of Financial SupportDevelopment of the Markets & Management Studies Program has been supported by generous donations from the GE Fund, BB&T, Dell Computer Corporation, Proctor & Gamble, Philip Morris, the Price Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, and the Lamond Foundation, among others. |
